The Bung Hatta Birthplace Museum in Bukittinggi is a reconstruction of the house where Mohammad Hatta was born and spent his early childhood. Hatta later became Indonesia’s first vice president and, with Soekarno, proclaimed the country’s independence in 1945.
Known locally as Museum Rumah Kelahiran Bung Hatta, the museum focuses on his family background and early life. It is owned by the Bukittinggi city government and managed by the city’s education and culture department.
Is the Bung Hatta Birthplace House original?
No. The building visitors see today is a reconstruction rather than the surviving original house.
The original house dated from around the 1860s and later collapsed around the 1960s. Reconstruction began in 1994, using historical photographs and family records as references. The reconstructed house was inaugurated as a museum on 12 August 1995.
The building visitors see today is therefore a historical reconstruction, not the original house preserved from Hatta’s childhood.
What can you see inside the museum?
The museum uses family photographs, family genealogy, furnishings, and household objects to present the environment connected to Hatta’s early life.
Together, these displays focus strongly on Hatta’s family setting and childhood rather than only on his later national role.
Several household objects in the national museum catalogue are explicitly identified as replicas, reflecting the reconstructed nature of parts of the museum display.
