Jam Gadang is a historic clock tower in the centre of Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. Built in 1926, it is officially registered as a national-level cultural heritage building.
One of its most distinctive features is the roof, which has changed several times as Bukittinggi passed through different periods of history.
When was Jam Gadang built?
Jam Gadang was built in 1926 during the Dutch East Indies period, when Bukittinggi was known administratively as Fort de Kock.
Why has the roof of Jam Gadang changed?
Jam Gadang has had three different roof forms.
During the Dutch colonial period, the tower had a domed roof. During the Japanese occupation, it was replaced with a pagoda-style roof.
After Indonesian independence, the top of the tower was changed again to the gonjong form visible today. The current roof follows a form closely associated with Rumah Gadang and Minangkabau architecture.

What do we know about the Jam Gadang clock mechanism?
Jam Gadang has four clock faces, allowing the time to be read from each side of the tower.
Government tourism sources state that the clock equipment was brought from Rotterdam and link the mechanism to B. Vortmann in Recklinghausen, Germany.
Another detail appears in the Roman numerals on the clock faces. The number four is written as IIII rather than the more familiar IV.
This form is commonly known as the clockmaker’s four and appears on many traditional clocks, so it is not unique to Jam Gadang.
